FACTORY SPOTLIGHT: MASUNAGA EYEWEAR


Haxby sunglasses are handcrafted entirely in Japan by one of the oldest eyewear manufacturers in the country. MASUNAGA has a philosophy that is in direct line with the Haxby ethos, quality over profit, making them the perfect partner for our eyewear.

Mr. Gozaemon Masunaga founded MASUNAGA Optical in 1905 in Fukui, Japan. Masunaga was not only a respectful craftsman, but a loyal mentor to his apprentices educating them how to write, read, and count when the day’s work was finished. He did this because he wanted to revolutionize the city of Fukui by raising highly-skilled workers and passing the craft on for generations to come. 97% of Japanese-made optical frames are manufactured in Fukui today.

 

 

The creation of an optical frame involves 200 manual processes. MASUNAGA Optical is the only manufacturer in Japan that has a factory responsible for all processes in-house, from raw materials to final production.  MASUNAGA Optical’s mission statement since day 1 of production has been “We manufacture excellent eyeglasses. We Want to make a profit if we can, but we don’t hesitate to take a loss. It is always in our thoughts to manufacture excellent eyeglasses.” 100 years after establishment, these words are still the basis of conduct code of MASUNAGA Optical’s employees.
